my gosh one of my favorite creature feature movies of my youth. simply put, ridley scott ripped off this gem frame br frame for alien. late 1950's no budget sci fi film that is more suited for horror fans imho.

A entertaining but completely unrealistic scifi film that's way more fi than sci. Marshall Thompson plays the sole survivior of the first Mars expedition who is immediately accused of murdering the other members of his expedition when being brought back to earth by the second Mars expedition. Instead they discover its the work of a Martian vampire--an alien that drains all the blood and fluids from a human's body. How this creature survived before humans showed up is not explained. The astronauts fight the monster on board ship using guns and grenades with no worries about blowing any holes in their ship. They smoke in the spaceship and don't seem to know there's no gravity in outer space. All this adds up to a pretty ridiculous film that's fun to watch if you're in just the right mood.

It's easy to see why John Carpenter enjoys this one as much as he does, it's overflowing with Howard Hawks-ness. Sure, it's dated and the cheese factor is high, but director Ed Cahn frames everything as if he's shooting a noir in space, and that lends a wonderful atmospheric quality to what would otherwise be a run of the mill monster movie. Dan O'Bannon has spoken openly about this being the inspiration for ALIEN, and it's clear in every aspect of production. The plot is lifted directly and that claustrophobic atmosphere was only ever matched twice - in the great Mario Bava's PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES, and in O'Bannon and Ridley Scott's masterpiece.

Long before there was 'Alien', there was IT! A classic low budget 50's sci-fi movie that would have made Roger Corman proud. Even with the obvious low budget, the movie kept me in suspense and in many aspects was surperior to Alien. It is a little seen movie from the 50's, so if you find a copy, watch it.
