It Came from the Desert (2018)

New Mexico, present day. Brian and Lukas are off to the desert to join a kegger party and to celebrate Lukas' victory in a motocross competition. His winning prize includes meeting The Deathinator, the biggest action star in the world. The party gets started under the hot desert sun, but Brian isn't in the mood, so he wanders off and is soon joined by his friend, Lukas. They discover something strange in the desert which leads them into a secret military laboratory, where they discover the disturbing truth of what the government has been doing. Secret experiments on ants and spiders using DNA found in a meteorite which fell to Earth in 1951 has given birth to mutated giant ants which have overrun the facility. Now, it's up to Brian and Lukas to save the world from a giant ant invasion!

This isn't especially 'good', and by setting its sights no higher than to pastiche the films it's aping (as much Aliens as Them!) it falls short of being in any way meaningful.

I was really hoping for it to keep to the storyline of the game but that was too much to hope for but in the end, it wasn't bad for a B movie.

The acting is ropy at times, but as B movies go this is a corker: knowing but not overwhelmingly meta, witty, with schlocky horror tropes tripping over each other. All that's missing is a canister of toxic waste and a Kevin Bacon cameo.

"It Came from the desert" is based on Cinemaware's 1989 game. The story takes place in the desert of course where giant mutated ants escape from the 50's facility and start killing people. This B movie is a cheesy horror/comedy with poor acting and a very different story from the game. Fans will love it other people might not.
