A Funny Caper with Lots of Cameos and a Great Ending

Uneven dark comedy directed by John Landis starring Jeff Goldblum as a socially inept person (a geek) who discovers that his wife is having an affair and stumbles across a lady (Michelle Pfeiffer) who is on the run from some Persian hitman involving some stolen gems. This is one of those smart dark comedies that tries just too hard and falls flat in a lot of cases. I was heavily reminded of a similar bomb directed by Martin Scorcesse called 'After Hours' starring Griffin Dune and Linda Fiorentino which was a twisted take of 'Alice in Wonderland' in 1980s New York, with the exception that this feature takes place in Los Angeles. Many cameos from veteran film directors and comedic actors. The only highlight was a short recurring cameo appearance from David Bowie as a Brit hitman sporting a Walther handgun and a knife.

Even though it has too many cameos to count (my favorite is Bowie as a hitman), it still manages to be a fun ride.

Decent 80s thriller that I recently rediscovered thanks to ITV3. Plot is thread-bare but Goldblum and Pfeiffer are likeable leads and whenever it threatens to get boring a new celebrity cameo appears to brighten things up. Best of these is David Bowie as Colin Morris: "You're very good..."

I first saw this movie when it premiered in February 1985. I loved Landis' movies : Animal House, Blues Brothers, and An American Werewolf in London, and Time magazine had a rave review. So I was pumped up big time. The teaming of Goldblum and Pfieffer can't miss right ? Wrong. I was so disappointed. I couldn't care less about Goldblum's insomnia or Pfieffer's jewel smuggling plight. Only reason to watch was non stop parade of director cameos, and other industry buddies of Landis' like Rick Baker. I recently saw this movie again on HBO, to see if my opinion will change. Nope. Movie is just as stilted and dead in the water as ever.
