In Infinitely Polar Bear, Ms. Forbes hasn’t made a movie about her father’s illness; she’s made one about her father, who, through hard and weird times, clearly helped give her what she needed so that one day she could tell this story.

Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana are so wonderful in this.

Finally, a film that does not render its mentally ill character a caricature. I disagree with the critics that its too much of a "feel-good" film or is too lightweight. There's a difference between warmth and saccharine/sugary. I see its treatment as mostly warmth. It doesn't shy away from showing Cameron's breakdowns, his difficulties as a parent or even being independent. It clearly shows us some of his failings but it doesn't depict him as a caricature of a failure or a monster or a brilliant success story. It consistently shows the ups and downs of trying to fulfill responsibilities as a mentally ill person. On issues of class, race and gender it is indeed a little lightweight but at least acknowledged e.g. we see the gender discrimination towards working mothers, even highly educated ones.

A poignant well acted film that depicts the struggles of bipolar disorder in primary mania. The disorder drives a wedge into his relationship but the financial struggles of his ex leave her with little choice but to ask him to care for their two daughters while she tries to better herself and life for her children. It's difficult but along the way there are a few laugh outlouds and we come to know that through it all their love is still alive. This is a great illustration of what can happen when bipolars refuse to take the medication, evidenced by a descent into the very things that got him into trouble in the first place. Forbes’ script simply cannot make the things she lived through alive for us in anything but the most glib, shallow and contrived way.
