Edyta is forty and in the midst of a crisis. She has left her family, her husband and son and their house on the Baltic Sea behind her. She spends her nights in a Warsaw hotel room and her days driving around the unfamiliar city. When she runs out of cash, she hatches a plan: An ad in the newspaper – sex for money. Edyta never lets things get that far though, as she drugs her clients and then uses their apartments as a refuge for the night. Then she meets an artist, Patryk. A smidgen of luck and Edyta can no longer maintain her dismissive attitude. In this enthralling character study, Tomasz Wasilewski uses filmic minimalism to ensure that glances and gestures say more than words. He portrays a lonely woman in both fragility and strength, using precise image composition.

maybe the best film of this decade so far, maybe.

A middle aged couple tries to deal with the loss of their one and only son, with tragic results. Slow-paced, and rightly so. Todd Field would go on to direct "Little Children" in 2006, and so now he has two excellent films on his resume. Strong performances from all involved.

I seem to recall this film coming out around the same time as American Beauty, and not too many people batted a second eye at it. Truthfully, this is a far better film than American Beauty. I still don't understand the fascination with Mendes' work. It's like comparing Big Fish to The Barbarian Invasions. Both Mendes' and Field's work concerns a dark family plot, but where Mendes handles his with hallucination and overdramatic monologue, Field is more concerned about sheer emotional devastation, and it works on so many more levels. There are deaths in each of these films, and whereas one seems to act as a last-ditch effort for a closer, the better one utilizes death as a worthy catalyst, and where the real movie begins. This is the best family drama ever made, bar none.

This movie totally didn't get enough attention! One of my favorite movies. Moving, captivating. It challenges one's idea about humanity and what degree one would go to in extreme situations.
