a psychological horror that sees the lead character going mad in a country house in ireland. gorgeously shot and full of visual hints and symbolism, the story is framed by a fairy tale she's been writing and keeps the viewer off balance between memory and imagination, aided by the disorienting score. a great performance by susannah york and masterfully done by altman, who emphasizes the puzzle by naming each of the main characters after one of his co-stars. very different from his later works, the film was believed lost for many years and deserves to be better known

What makes this film so magical is that it challenges the audience. Altman has always claimed that films should not be casually viewed and that they should hold an audience's attention. This is probably his best personal example.

Altman's examination of schizophrenia displays an obvious indebtedness to Bergman's "Persona," a film he would more successfully exploit in 1977's "Three Women." Yet whereas "Persona" explored the limits of the film medium itself, Altman's film is focused on a single woman's mental illness. Altman does an exceptional job evoking the main character's subjective state through repetitive shots of her hallucinations and John Williams' creepy score. Unfortunately, the film is incredibly tedious, and it seems implausible that everyone around this woman, including her own husband, would be so oblivious to her psychosis.

Surrealism. Is she crazy or is it real? If you liked Carnival of Souls, Lost Highway, Let's Scare Jessica to Death or Gaslight, you may find that this is a suitable companion film.

A must-see for fans of Altman's 3 WOMEN. Also, fans of Roeg and Bergman (or even Polanski) should dig for this gem too.
