Today it can be seen as one of Altman's most fascinating -- and terrifying -- films.

Ed Q 08 Aug 2009

The wondrously atmospheric "Images" possesses its own internal logic and therefore isn't an exploration of any real psychological disorder. Altman takes his usual stylistic approach and greatly relies on Vilmos Zsigmond's stellar photography to craft an organic, purely cinematic experience.

Never has the term "lost masterpiece" ever been more applicable. Altman's surreal thriller was thought to be lost in a fire but a print was amazingly discover. The film is structured as a puzzle, with the film presented through the fractured mind of Cathryn (Susannah York). The film plays with the viewers mind as reality and delusion blend together into an hallucinatory blur that is challenging, yet incredibly fun, to decipher. Indeed, the tale has a twist in the end that is truly unexpected and gives chills down the viewer's spine. It is also important to mention the lush and dreamlike atmosphere the film creates, with some of the best landscapes shots put on celluloid (it's visual design is very reminiscent of Nicholas Roeg's "Don't Look Now"). If you are in the mood for a challenging film, do yourself a favor and see this!

gREAT MOVIE about a woman's inner life

Clare N 11 Oct 2007

One of the lesser known Altman films, "Images" is a very clever study of mental illness. The film itself is almost "experimental" in style as it captures a writer and her schitzophrenic delusions. Are they real or imagined? The John Williams score (before he went all over the top for the likes of "Star Wars") is stark and haunting and coupled with Stomu Yamashta's wonderful sound design brings much to the rather disturbing mood of the film. Both entertaining and chilling, it's a shame this film does not garner the same prestige as other Altman works.
