III (2015)

A small European town, where sisters Ayia and Mirra live, gets struck down by an unknown disease which takes many lives. Following their mother's death, the younger sister falls ill. Having realized that conventional medicine is useless in the face of the sister's disease, Ayia seeks help from Father Herman, a parish priest and a close family friend. In his house she finds books that are very far from the conventional religion. She gets to know that only penetration into Mirra's sick subconscious mind and discovery of the true cause of her disease will give her a chance to save her sister. Ayia is ready to go through this terrifying ritual, dive into the depths of the subconscious mind, and face the demons residing there. But will she cope with her own fear when she discovers the mysteries of her sister's past? Since the closer to the bottom of the ocean, the darker it gets.

This is one hollow exercise in pretention and incoherence. Images alone, even the abstract, can well replace, supplement and support a narrative; here, the breaks in continuity abound and deprive III of even this structure. Mr. Khvaleev, born in Russia, has set his film somewhere in Soviet satellite Mitteleuropa. This makes you wonder why the inscriptions on the stained glass windows of the church are in English. The town's cemetery, where the girls' mother is buried, seems to be hundreds of miles away from the town, judging by the landscape. The ease with which Father Herman agrees to what amounts to an act of paganism would certainly raise eyebrows in the Vatican, if not lead to his swift excommunication. This could all be excused if the narrative were gripping, even mildly. As it is, the film is strictly a bore.

III: The Ritual: This is a moody, broody Russian horror film about a couple of sisters who enlist the help of a priest and centuries old rituals when they discover that a sickness killing the people of their village is actually the work of demons preying on their subconscious minds. It's a trippy concept and the story's more cerebral slow burn versus more traditional horror cliches is thought provoking. But it's just a bit slow for most tastes. C+ On Netflix In Russian with subtitles.

An interesting psychological and theological movie. Heavy on the subtlety and metaphors. If you were looking for something to mesmerize you, this may be it.
