I Was Born, But... (1932)

Brothers Keiji and Ryoichi move to a new neighborhood in the Tokyo suburbs after their father, an office clerk, is promoted. The boys join the local gang as lowly new kids and emerge as natural leaders after defeating a bully. While visiting the home of their father's boss, the brothers witness the ridicule their father endures to please his superior. Angry and embarrassed, the boys find their naive ideas about power being challenged.

Even in 1932, Ozu's sensibility was fully formed. The camera work was fluider, but those shots of trains going by were already there. This movie was touching in inself- the classic moment when children realise their father is not perfect- but also a little grim in that the boys's dreams of being generals, in 1932, might become the reality of being soldiers in WWII.

This is one of the loveliest films about children I've ever seen, and parents, and life, and the whole damn thing. Great way to become acquainted with the warm humanism of Ozu's cinema. Captures the sweet sadness of life like few others. Keeps you laughing, even as it takes your breath away with moments of poignant awareness.

A silent masterpiece from Yasujiro Ozu. Although it represents Ozu in the early stages of his craft, it contains the distinctive Ozu elements and is overall a pleasure to sit through. Despite being a silent film, it is fresh in much the same way as A Story of Floating Weeds is - the story could very well have taken place yesterday. As well as being a sensitive portrayal of childhood, it is also damn funny.

One of Yasujiro Ozu's most sublime films.

The early pictures by Ozu only prove that a director only makes one movie in his life and then breaks it into little pieces and makes it again. Whether it is silent, sound or color cinema Ozu's pictures are all more or less the same, all carrying the same themes that matter most to him. This, however, would give the wrong impression to someone new to his films but there is always a fresh idea that he manages to incorporate in the most subtle fashion.
