I Was Born, But... (1932)

Brothers Keiji and Ryoichi move to a new neighborhood in the Tokyo suburbs after their father, an office clerk, is promoted. The boys join the local gang as lowly new kids and emerge as natural leaders after defeating a bully. While visiting the home of their father's boss, the brothers witness the ridicule their father endures to please his superior. Angry and embarrassed, the boys find their naive ideas about power being challenged.

[I Was Born, But . . .] is a master class -- one of the [Ozu's] earliest -- in the art of distilling emotional intensity from quiet lives.

Quite simply a masterpiece and the most sublime silent movie I have ever had the pleasure to experience. Two young boys realize their father is not perfect and react angrily but hilariously. The child actors are nothing less than perfect themselves. I am so happy I have so much Ozu in front of me.

It took me a while to realize what was so strange about Ozu's silent work, but I finally did: his silent pictures are identical to his talkie's apart from the lack of sound. This is incredibly unusual. There is essentially no change in style, tone, story, performances, etc. It looks and feels no different from his later work. The title tells the whole story here. It is once again a touching and perceptive work about the struggles of existence in modern day Japan and the differences between the classes. This time it is told mainly from children's perspective. It is easy to become furious with the boys and think they are nothing but spoiled brats. However, Ozu is simply injecting all the potential fury of those less fortunate in the world into their young characters. It does not approach hisbest work, but it is highly effective.
