This is not the zombie movie the way modern audiences know zombie movies. The zombie here is the voodoo/Haitian type involving spiritualism and black magic. This is a Val Lewton production directed by Jacques Tourneur. Like what he did with "Cat People," Tourneur effectively uses shadows and atmosphere to create a sense of dread. It doesn't actually SCARE you in the conventional way but it does creep you out and it does so beautifully.

a little slow and therefore hard to follow in the beginning but it slowly twines itself in itself with great imagery with heart pounding and mind stopping score. really great

Much better than it sounds. A great look at Caribbean culture through the eyes of white America.

Wow, tsé, en 1943 faire un film avec des acteurs en majorité noirs, pis avec un personnage qui vient de la ville d'Ottawa, c'est quand même malade!

Builds with a measured pace and uses that time to really develop dramatic conflict and inferiority. As the tone of the film grows increasingly bleak and murky the visuals become fantastic. The cumulative effect is very rewarding.
