I Vitelloni (1953)

Five young men dream of success as they drift lazily through life in a small Italian village. Fausto, the group's leader, is a womanizer; Riccardo craves fame; Alberto is a hopeless dreamer; Moraldo fantasizes about life in the city; and Leopoldo is an aspiring playwright. As Fausto chases a string of women, to the horror of his pregnant wife, the other four blunder their way from one uneventful experience to the next.

To my mind, one of the most beautiful stories of growing up ever, and a template of sorts for dozens of similar movies ever since. Five guys living in a sleepy little Italian town have reached that make-or-break point where you either find your destiny or resign yourself to living out the same dreary lives as your parents -- moving forward or staying still. One young man wants to be a writer, another has knocked up a girl and has to marry her -- but his playboy days are far from over -- another is constantly worried about his sister, and all of them, whether they know it or not, are running out of time.

My favourite Fellini. Anybody who would call themselves a fan of the likes of American Graffiti, Dazed And Confused and Diner should really search this out. A group of young men with dreams and ambitions in the light of the realities of life. Coming of age at its best.

This I really dug. I hate to say it, but I related to this in a big way, which certainly is a big reason why I loved it. I really appreciate that Fellini comes back to the ocean in practically all of his films. It's always that unattainable freedom or advancement the character needs. Sometimes you have to jump in and swim. Other times you get thrown in. And others just sit on the shore and watch.

Oh, ensemble films, nice, beautiful, tender. What is life? How do you change, how do you know when you stop being a boy and become a man? Is life about facing your fears? or is it about being a little boy? Only Fellini could master this, great film!
