Paraphrasing another critic, I,Tonya was like "Goodfellas with Ice Skating". I loved the breaking of the fourth wall and the narrating by the characters. This movie succeded as a dark comedy. They took a real life tragedy and showed multiple view points of the events which made the audience: laugh, cringe and wonder. It was very well acted by Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan and Allison Janney. The movie offered a look into Tonya's past so that viewers saw her violent upbringing and abusive marriage. I'm not sure if this was supposed to bring sympathy to Harding or to just give an accurate interpretation of Harding's life (essentially I'm not sure how much is true vs. how much was dramatized for the film). I also liked the message the film concluded with about how Americans need someone to "hate" and to "laugh" at. Great film from 2017!

So pleased I went to see this movie, despite going to the cinema alone for the first time. Laughed and cried and amazed at the skating scenes. Wonderful!

I remember being mesmerised by Tonya Harding when she broke onto the skating scene around the early 1990s. She came across as amazingly strong physically (the first US woman to pull off the triple axle) yet emotionally vulnerable which made her easy to empathise with. Yes, I'm talking about ladies figure skating. Margot Robbie utterly inhabits the role and is simply stunning in her very physical portrail of Tonya. in many ways it resembles Whiplash, and is at times more harrowing . I give it 5 stars because for me I was totally satisfied, but I think the context of following her career means maybe it worked better for me than for those who didn't grow up with her. The best film I've seen so far this year *****

I, Tonya is many things. It's extremely entertaining. It's very well directed and edited. The two main performances by Margo Robbie and Alison Janney are career bests. Janney give a tour de force performance that should easily earn her a academy award nomination. It's funny. It's sad. And in the end it points the finger at all of us who are part of the story according to Tonya's last speech in the film.
