I Shot Jesse James (1949)

Bob Ford murders his best friend Jesse James in order to obtain a pardon that will free him to marry his girlfriend Cynthy. The guilt-stricken Ford soon finds himself greeted with derision and open mockery throughout town. He travels to Colorado to try his hand at prospecting in hopes that marriage with Cynthy is still in the cards.

Fuller points out the absurdity of the entire concept of modern myth-making, and kicks off the grand tradition of subversive neo-Westerns.

I may be stretching things a little but I thought this film was absolutly great. This film is much more psychologically complex than any other portrayal of Jesse James and Bob Ford I have ever seen. Bob Ford is portrayed sympathetically and also as a innocent child. He lived with killing Jesse James and seemed to accept it but at the end of it all he says that he always regretted it. Great Film.

Samuel Fuller's debut isn't as strong as his other films, but there are some moments of nuance and brilliance and nuance among the basic tropes of the times. The bar scene in which Ford asks the musician to play the song that tears into him, the infamous bathtub scene, and the reenactment of the famous shooting on stage are all amazing scenes. However, the movie seems to lose steam throughout and the second half is just a basic western love triangle. The acting is solid and the story is okay, but ultimately the smaller parts of the movie work better than a whole package.

Poor Bob Ford just can't get a break. He kills Jesse James for the amnesty so he can marry his girl, and she shuns him for the crime. Then his world really unravels. Mildly interesting...mostly not.

Better than usual forties western, where the main character is an anti-hero.
