I Shot Jesse James (1949)

Bob Ford murders his best friend Jesse James in order to obtain a pardon that will free him to marry his girlfriend Cynthy. The guilt-stricken Ford soon finds himself greeted with derision and open mockery throughout town. He travels to Colorado to try his hand at prospecting in hopes that marriage with Cynthy is still in the cards.

Bad-ass, a fascinating movie, a psychological adventure into the mind of Robert Ford, the camera-work is utterly sublime.

Samuel Fuller's first film features John Ireland playing the kind of two-faced killer he later became known for. Strangely enough, Jesse James doesn't have much of a presence in this and when Frank James comes to avenge his brother, nothing happens. Instead Fuller (who wrote the script) plays up the love triangle between Ireland, Preston Foster and the fetching Barbra Britton who looks all the world like Nichole Kidman in some scenes. But the film, like the Brad Pitt retelling of the story falls flat and gets bogged down by its own storytelling.

Wonderfully entertaining old B-western about Robert Ford, an outlaw who shot his best friend Jesse James in the back in exchange for amnesty, and how the murder haunted him for the rest of his life. Hokey at times but solidly crafted, and remarkably engaging. A good mix of psychological drama and western gunslinging - raising it above your typical throwaway B-movie.
