Pervasive drug culture, strong language in drama/thriller.

Timothée Chalamet is becoming a familiar face on the big screen and while he has managed to leave a mark, for me he has not yet done anything that makes him stand out completely. I know that many went crazy for him because of Call Me By Your Name, but I wasn't one of them. Yes I'm also aware he got an Oscar nomination but that really doesn't say much to tell the truth. I admit the guy has a good presence and he can really act but in this film despite doing things well, the script is so lazy that it doesn't actually help him at all. This is the typical case of a film that doesn't add anything to his resume and doesn't create a memorable memory in the viewer. It's not a blatant disappointment but it's a film that leaves you with very little after finishing it.

Hot Summer Nights is pretty much just a showcase for Timothee Chalamet. I want to say that he saved this dry, forgettable mess, but he did not.

I thought the movie had its moments but not enough of them. Some of the dialogue is terribly awkward, and some of the plot elements are head shakingly nonsensical. The fine actor William Fichtner had a small but powerful role towards the end of the film, and I found that scene riveting. Overall, this movie just didn't ring true, as I see it.

The characters, the dumb dialogue, and the story mechanics are the biggest problems with “Hot Summer Nights,” which never convinces, while it uses an annoying, legend-building voiceover narration from an unseen local to keep hawking the notion that we’re seeing life-changing, mythic events.
