Hood to Coast (2011)

The documentary follows four unlikely teams on their epic journey to conquer the world's largest relay race. A 67-year-old heart attack survivor returns to conquer the race that nearly killed her, a family in mourning runs to honor the memory of their beloved, a group of film animators test the limits of their athleticism (or lack thereof), and a group of aging jocks show they still know how to have a good time. Christoph Baaden, the director, loses sight of the fact that, for people who don't run, the cult of running is kind of boring.

Totally engaging, entirely fun, completely exhilarating and surprisingly hilarious. This wasn't a perfect film though. They did not at all discuss logistics, highlit few teams and individuals on the course, and spent way too much time with an overbearingly maudlin family who lost a loved one. Still, thrilling to the max and it was a pleasure seeing it in the theater with a bunch of fit people who didn't buy any of the concessions.

Hood to Coast mostly suffers from an incessant soundtrack that stuffs the film with a peppiness that blocks the tragedy of its characters from view, as well as their overcoming it.
