The status of Laughton and Lean drew me to this, but the charm is really on the rest of the ensemble who are hilarious without being cartoonish. It hums along on brisk dialog and gorgeous high-contrast scenery until the perfectly predictable but thoroughly satisfying pay-off. If Lean made other comedies, I'll chase them down.

A superb cast (Laughton, Mills, De Banzie) and a charming script. This David Lean romantic comedy is technically beautiful and wonderfully enjoyable.

Hobson's Choice is unmistakably the work of a craftsman; but an over-elaborate pursuit of effects, alien to the tone of the play, cannot but over-weight the material.

Hobson's an alcoholic shoe seller with three hot daughters that want to get married. Everything goes to shit when the oldest of the daughters runs away with his top shoemaker to set up their own business. Built like a proper 50's movie, crisp clean black & white, story structure sturdy as a stone-built house, and comedy that's just plain darn funny. Absolutely a great film.
