Hero (1997)

Ma Wing Jing and his older brother Ma Tai Chueng arrive in Shanghai to make their fortune at the end of the Qin Dynasty. Be-friending a powerful mobster Wing Jing is given his nightclub in return for saving Tam Sei's life. Unfortunately, another Gangster wants the territory a well. Corruption and violence rule the streets as Wing Jing and Tam Sei must battle not only the rival gangs but the corrupt police officials as well.

Quite easily one my favourite films, compelling story told in a intresting way and backed up by the most visually stunning images on film. The fight in the raining courtyard still one of the best fight put to screen, no need for showy bullet time or crazy explosions just the fine art of combat.

Smisao macevanja se moze objasniti kroz tri faze. U prvoj fazi covek i mac postaju jedno. Tako da i naj manja travka u rukama macevaoca postaje smrtonosno oruzije. U drugoj fazi covek pronalazi mac u srcu. Tako da moze da savlada neprijatelje u blizini na 100 koraka. U trcoj fazi covek ne nosi mac ni u ruci ni u srcu. Sklopio je mir sa macem i zavetovao se da ce siriti mir gde god se nalazio.

I have never been that much of a fan of Martial Arts films as usually just dudes kicking each other rather repetatively for 90 minutes. Hero, however, has made me want to explore this genre more extensively as it showed me that there are ways to combine creative storytelling and stunning visuals with Martial Arts to create a very entertaining film.
