Hero (1997)

Ma Wing Jing and his older brother Ma Tai Chueng arrive in Shanghai to make their fortune at the end of the Qin Dynasty. Be-friending a powerful mobster Wing Jing is given his nightclub in return for saving Tam Sei's life. Unfortunately, another Gangster wants the territory a well. Corruption and violence rule the streets as Wing Jing and Tam Sei must battle not only the rival gangs but the corrupt police officials as well.

Having watched the extras on the DVD the director said his measure of success is if certain images stay with viewers for years after they have seen the film. He's been massively successful with this film. I saw it when it first came out (around 5 years ago) and that's what stayed with me - how amazing this film looks. Having watched it again I am happily reminded that the plot and characters are pretty dang good too. You must watch this in the original language with subtitles though. Not only will you not be distracted by bad dubbing you will also get to chuckle at all the "Yaaaaaagh!" subtitles.

I loved the artistry they put into this movie, with the changing storylines and their representative colors and the whole story and the metaphorical allusions with swordplay being compared to music and calligraphy is really beautiful. There was more depth instead of just fancy swordplay just for the sake of swordplay and revenge. It was a strong story held told quitely and with great finesse.

China, the Warring States Period: A nameless warrior has been brought to meet the King of Qin, a powerful warlord who seeks to establish Empire over the other 5 kingdoms. Nameless has slain 3 assassins from the Kingdom of Zhao who had sworn to kill the King of Qin, thus he is permitted to approach His Majesty and recount the story of his deeds....but the King is clever and knows all is not as it seems... Beautiful, gorgious, magnificent, awsome. With cinematography, action and characters to sweep you into a world long past this is a must see, and is much, much better then Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon on every level. This is a movie to lose yourself in (the duel on the lake between Jet Li and Tony Leung was worth the price of the DVD alone, add the final scenes between Nameless and the King and its a steal). Weaving action, art both visual and musical, and the ideals of noble sacrifice, if you haven't seen it stop what your doing and grab a copy, this is defeinitly a must see.

I really do like this film because it is a beautiful, stunning film and the use of color in this film was perfected. It is a foreign film in Chinese which sounded beautiful adding to the story. The action scenes are beautiful and unique, each posing a different mood. The story or "tale", as I like to call it, is beautiful and imaginative. But the acting itself was once again beautiful, and more than once i cried during this film. I'm some what surprised it did not win best cinematography oscar award because this film, I can say is the "beautiful" film I've seen, not my favorite but it is beautiful in every way.
