Robert, a jaded middle-aged New Yorker, travels to Belgrade to make some quick cash by marrying someone for U.S. immigration papers. The plan goes awry when the money never arrives, leaving Robert stuck in Serbia. Meanwhile in New York, Banko, the young Serb whose girlfriend Robert is to marry, fights to come up with the cash.

Teeters on the brink of soppiness in places, and treads a well-worn path with an overabundance of sub-Jarmusch deadpan humor and pathos, but is lifted by its towering performances.

"here and there" has been compared to such jim jarmusch films as "stranger than paradise", and director lungulov does emulate jarmusch's deliberate pace, minimal dialogue and deadpan humor. in fact, belgrade with its tattered charm is the movie's most compelling character. but lungulov's approach is ultimately more conventional than jarmusch's. he's often stuck with corny visual cues: a fresh outlook is symbolized by a clean shave, and a restored sense of humor by a dab of whipped cream on the nose. tame and a tad boring.
