Harry and Tonto (1974)

Harry Coombes is a retired teacher in his 70s who has lived in the Upper West Side of New York City all his life. When his building is torn down to make way for a parking garage, Harry and his beloved cat Tonto begin a journey across the United States — visiting his children, seeing a world he never seemed to have the time to see before, making new friends, and saying goodbye to old friends.

A poignant and at times funny masterpiece. Art Carney is absolutely fantastic.

a simple, easy to take road picture. Art Carney is basically the whole show here and he gives a very endearing,oscar-winning performance

It's a sweet road trip movie that gets a bad wrap due to Carney's Oscar win over Al Pacino in Godfather 2 and Dustin Hoffman in Lenny but deserves a better legacy. Though I think Hoffman should have won that year, Carney gives a touching and sweet performance.

Being that I have a great love for cats, I checked this movie out and thoroughly enjoyed it. Art Carney is great as an old man living in a NYC apt. with his cat Tonto, who must move when the building is being torn down. A real joy for animal lovers and also for anyone that likes an old movie with no car crashes, explosions, and gangsters!

didn't quite know where this one was going. a man and his cat on a cross-country adventure. from his old life in New York to his eventual new life in LA, he knows and meets some interesting characters, but to what end? Carney gives a great performance as a grizzled old man whose best friend is his cat. the relationships between all the other characters though seem very superficial and don't really make life-altering impacts on our protagonist's journey. the bible-quoting hitchhiker, the medicine man, the little kid building a sand castle...I just don't see a point. enjoyable with definite moments of humour and poignancy, but overall pretty bland.
