Hardware (1990)

Mark 13 is a government-built killing machine programmed with artificial intelligence, able to repair and recharge itself from any energy source. Through a series of coincidences, the cyborg's head ends up in the home of a sculptress as a bizarre Christmas present from her boyfriend. Once inside its new home, the cyborg promptly reconstructs the rest of its body using a variety of household utensils and proceeds to go on a murderous rampage.

A little slow and vastly outdated now, but nonetheless very watchable.

Highly entertaining cyber-punk B-movie shlock, that owes a huge debt to the last ten minutes of "The Terminator" and the more techno-nihilistic strips found within the pages of "2000 A.D.". The confines of what must have been a small budget pop through at moments, but on the whole the director gets a lot of mileage out of what he's got, channelling as he does the spirits of James Cameron, Ridley Scott and Stanley Kubrick. The film manages to create its own little dystopia effectively, with a dark, sadistic over-sexualised media burbling away in the background, whether it be the inane TV shows or Iggy Pop's shock-jock DJ. No new concepts are plundered here, but the mix of genres and influences is a highly satisfying one although one has to take in their stride the wobbly acting and the very 80s stylistic tics. The psychedelic sequence towards the end is very good too. "Hardware" is a cult classic that's worth plugging into.

Absolutely love this new uncut released 2-disc DVD of Richard Stanley's post-apocalyptic thriller about a very deadly robot. The video is very impressive, and I've also always liked the strange soundtrack, with a fairly new at the time, industrial rock. This is not everyones cup of tea for sure, but I like the whole story concept, and especially the scenes of the M.A.R.K. 13 droid putting itself together. After it completes that, it goes on a wild no holds barred bloody killing spree. I listened to the Stanley commentary, since I know the movie pretty well, and it is very good. Stanley talks quite a bit about his planned sequel that never got off the ground, but something he still hopes for. I doubt that will ever happen, so don't miss this excellent futuristic sci-fi horror flick.
