Harbinger Down (2015)

A group of grad students have booked passage on the fishing trawler Harbinger to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea. When the ship's crew dredges up a recently thawed piece of old Soviet space wreckage, things get downright deadly. It seems that the Russians experimented with tardigrades, tiny resilient animals able to withstand the extremes of space radiation. The creatures survived, but not without mutation. Now the crew is exposed to aggressively mutating organisms. And after being locked in ice for 3 decades, the creatures aren't about to give up the warmth of human companionship.

Decent little Thing homage. Nothing really spectacular or noteworthy, but it has some cool creature FX. Lance Henricksen is always a bonus.

Gillis is a genius when it comes to practical effects. With the film's defective plot and sullied execution, Harbinger Down simply feels like Gillis' outlet to show off his talent.

Bad acting and atrocious dialogue is topped only by the cheap shoddiness of the practical FX this demo-reel flick is meant to show off. Better they'd remained unseen.

This is a classic style science fiction horror film with Bishop himself Lance Henriksen in a key role and the movie is executed extremely well. The prosthetic work is the best I've seen in years, the sets feel real, music, sound and physical effects are all pulled off beautifully. The only few places that this movie falls short are a few of the actors come off a bit stiff, the lighting sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, some of the prosthetic doesn't look perfect at certain angles but where I think this movie loses the most is actually the quality that its filmed at. Now with everything being in HD and high quality you can see every single flaw this movie has where you wouldn't notice the same flaws if you were watching say Aliens. Despite the problems this movie knows exactly the audience that its trying to reach and it does, it does with flying colors. For a cheesy sci fi horror flick coming out in 2015 this movie does exactly what it promises, nothing more nothing less.

A low-budget, badly acted Thing rip-off. Made by the guys who did the practical effects for The Thing prequel (which were tragically covered up by awful CGI), the film serves as nothing more than an effects showcase. To the team's credit, while this film is pretty bad, the practical effects used are pretty good. My only real complaint (besides the bad acting and poor script), is that it's hard to make out what exactly is going on a good deal of the time thanks to bad camera work, it's also frustrating that a good deal of the effects shots utilize close-up angles. When you can make out what the effects look like (which is thankfully, a good deal of the time), they look impressive. Worth a look if only to see what the effects in The Thing prequel could have been like.
