Hal (2019)

Hal Ashby's obsessive genius led to an unprecedented string of Oscar®-winning classics, including Harold and Maude, Shampoo and Being There. But as contemporaries Coppola, Scorsese and Spielberg rose to blockbuster stardom in the 1980s, Ashby's uncompromising nature played out as a cautionary tale of art versus commerce.

The film is an affectionate ode to Ashby but isn't blind to his flaws, the sort of complex but forgiving treatment that I'm sure Ashby would have liked.

It must have been daunting to make a film about a master editor and filmmaker, but Scott has clearly learned from her careful attention to Ashby's films.

Elias Savada 04 Jan 2019

...a reflective meditation on the (high) life and (best) films of Hal Ashby, a director of note during the 1970s, when he churned out award-worthy films that now shape this debut documentary from Los Angeles-based editor Amy Stone.

Robert Abele 04 Sep 2018

If there's still the sense that Ashby isn't as sanctified as American New Wave stalwarts Coppola or Scorsese, Amy Scott's breezy tribute of a documentary is out to correct that oversight.

Alistair Harkness 27 Jun 2018

Amy Scott provides a welcome primer for the work of the late, great Hal Ashby.
