Gypo (2005)

Gypo is the story of a working class family in Margate, Kent, a town where immigrants have become the focus of most of the public's discontent. The film tells the story of the a couple of weeks in this family's life, beginning when a young Czech girl, Tash, comes to visit. The film is made in the Dogme95 tradition, so no costumes, no lighting, no props or sets, which gives the film a gritty texture appropriate to the story.

Don't let the fact of this being a low-budget flick fool you! Gypo is a great debut for director Jan Dunn! Three mini stories overlap to create a tedious experience for their main characters. The plot and points of view are very cohesive with the film's excellent screenplay. If there was a way to better publicize this film, its credibility would likely be held with higher regards. It is suprisingly easy to find this film in any video store. Go rent it!

Fantastic - with many twists and turns and surprises. The Dogme 95 style was a bit grating at first, but I soon got used to it, and it did work very well. As others have said, it takes a little while to get going, but once it does, I was hooked. I thought Helen looked familiar, but it's only on reading some of the other comments that I realised it was Mrs "go on, go on, go on" Doyle. I have to say that Paul McGann was possibly the weakest link, but you can't have everything.

How can a movie with Mrs Doyle and Rula Lenska be bad? A slow start, but full of surprises until the end.

The film is brilliantly acted ... [Pauline] McLynn, in particular, is fantastic, whilst [Chloe] Serene (who's actually English) is something of a revelation.
