Roger Greenberg, a failed musician now making a living as a carpenter in New York, returns to Los Angeles to house-sit for his brother. He's stranded there—since he doesn't drive—until his brother's assistant, Florence, comes to his rescue. Greenberg is not an enjoyable movie, but it's a unique experience that will mostly appeal to cinephiles with insatiable appetites for character-driven small films.

The storytelling may not always be sharp enough, but director Noah Baumbach's vision of a Los Angeles where people with dreams slowly age into bland irrelevance is spot-on.

It delicately walks the line between fascinating and unbearably uncomfortable to watch. It's a character piece focused on a quirky guy who's just been released from a mental institution after having a nervous breakdown. He's incredibly awkward, humorless, scared, and unwilling to admit that he is any of these things. This makes for a plethora of painful interactions that will inevitably determine whether you love or can't stand watching this movie. This film is not for everyone... but the only way you'll find out if it's for you is if you watch it. At the very least, you'll get to see Ben Stiller in a whole new light.

Noah Basumbach is the writer behind some of the quirkier works of Wes Anderson, as well as a praised director of films such as âMargot at the Weddingâ? and âThe Squid and the Whaleâ?. âGreenbergâ? is his latest directorial effort, and it will seem very familiar to people who have seen his other work. Laconic, subtle, slightly surreal stuff with a strong focus on character and dialogue. Any plot only serves as a frame for individual scenes that on their own carry the droplets of substance. Greta Gerwig, Ben Stiller and Jennifer Jason Leigh all do well in their portrayal of somewhat unfocused characters. This isnâ(TM)t a particularly funny or feel-goody comedy, nor is it grim or dramatic. Still, there is power here, and while this one will split opinions for sure, Iâ(TM)m certain it will be a movie that will touch many more than they initially realize.
