Short, tart, yet unexpectedly sweet, Paul Weitz's "Grandma" is a small-scale character study - and, because that character is played by the great Lily Tomlin, it's mesmerizing, right up until its final frame.

Grandma: Lily Tomlin is Elle, a cranky, free spirited writer coping with being dumped by her much younger girlfriend when along comes teenage granddaughter, Sage, who's pregnant and looking for money to pay for an abortion. So off they go, in search of cash from an assortment of friends and past loves, learning about each other in the process. This well-written, feminist-fueled story is funny, refreshingly unpredictable and realistic. And Tomlin, who shines amidst a stellar supporting cast (Marcia Gay Harden, Sam Elliott, Laverne Cox and the late Elizabeth Pena in one of her final performances) may just find herself driving her clunker of a car (another star of the film) to the Oscars next year. Exceptional. A+

Fast-paced, funny, filled with witty lines and yet suffused with a deep melancholy, Grandma provides Lily Tomlin with her best role in ages.

The film isn’t about abortion, or even really about Sage. It’s about grief and the importance of moving on. When Sage forces Elle to ask others for help, Elle has to let down her defenses and allow her loved ones to see that her misanthropy is mostly an act.
