Top drawer nuttiness - where it's not abject shite, its almost art

A profound insight into the mind of transvestites, who, as Wood emphasises, are NOT homosexual. PULL DA STRINGS!!!

It's definitely the most personal film Ed Wood made, but it's not the kind of stuff he excelled at, which was Z-grade sci-fi trash. This movie feels like an hour-long PSA clearing up misconceptions on transvestites, which was a brave subject to tackle back in 1953. Like all Ed Wood films, it's got horrible acting, terrible use of stock footage, hideous dialogue, and has piss-poor pacing, but the tone is charming, and it's worth seeing for Bela Lugosi's bizarre monologues alone. It's essential viewing for the Ed Wood aficionado, and fans of trash cinema in general.

Wood's 8 1/2. More revealing and human than a dozen Steven Soderburgh movies.

So, so, so funny. The stars are not for its quality. It is pure rubbish. But it is hilarious - every moment of it. Ed Wood tries to convince the world that cross-dressing is completely normal, in a film that can't decide whether it wants to be a public service announcement, a documentary, a narrative romance or a soft-porn acid trip.
