Ghost Story (1974)

Several old college friends converge at a mansion, ostensibly for a pleasant reunion. Larry Dann, the most easygoing of the bunch, comes to the conclusion that all is not well in the old dark house. For one thing, he's run across several people whom he's never met. For another, they all seem to be of a different time and place.

A solid spook story of ghostly revenge that kept me interested to the end. It could have benefited from a more visionary director, because it really only taps the surface of its atmospheric potential. Alice Krige is a treasure -- nobody plays spooky like her (most of us know her as Star Trek's Borg Queen). The old veteran actors, however, are not as great as I thought they might be. Houseman seems to be phoning it in, and Douglas is a bit over the top. Astair and Fairbanks are the only ones giving an effort. The few moments of gore are well-executed, and Philip Sarde's score is very good. I'm not sure I understand the mechanics behind the finale, but it's an enjoyable ride nonetheless.

Long winded, uneventful, under exposed. If you watch it have a healthy shot of caffine first.

Ghost Story is a 1981 (What a year!) supernatural horror movie. What this film lacks in a orderly and coherent plot it makes up for in strangeness and chills! There's a sense of dread and spookiness that only builds with every scene! Ghost Story also has some impressive and quite creepy makeup effects under it's sleeve. There are moments where characters and plot points float in and out of the movie as a haphazard break to the more stylish and visceral scenes (something I think could get on peoples nerves). I imagine in the Novel there are some spots that translate better. I would say check out Ghost Story if you're a horror fan looking for a ghost story (a-ha!) with atmosphere and style put ahead of story. Always see for yourself!

Oddly enough back when I watched this movie I would sit through a movie all the way till the end no matter how bad it was. Not this one. Turned this one off after forty minutes. Those forty minutes felt like eight hours and those eight hours were the boringest I ever lived through.

The book scared the hell out of me. The movie? Eh...not so much. It had its moments, but it really just didn't do it for me.
