Get on the Bus (1996)

Fifteen Black men gather in South Central LA to take a cross-country bus trip to attend the Million Man March in Washington, DC in October 1995. Among the attendees are an eclectic set of characters, including a laid-off aircraft worker, a man whose at-risk son is handcuffed to him, a Black Republican, a former gangsta, a Hollywood actor, a cop of mixed racial background, and a white bus driver. All make the trek discussing issues surrounding the March, including manhood, religion, politics, sexuality, and race.

I watched this with it being "Obama" day; thought it be quite apt, although not having a clue what the "Million Man March" was (thank you wilkopedia). This would make a good English Literature or perhaps American Social studies, or even just good to watch in black community groups. Its essentially a very well written group of different black men on a bus, in a talking heads style which is very addictive. There are lots of procogative issues inlcuded including sexism, homophobia and (pro) racism which in itself sparks a reaction, but then thats the point. The whole film is a open debate for black people, about black americans, there rights, there history, there perceptions (and perceptors) and their hope and dreams which is ultimately effective. However this constraints and restrict the audiences to americans and specifically black americans only.

Absolutely one of the funniest and most significant films Lee has made. While the characters may present obvious viewponts, they do so with style; the dialogue sparks and there's a great selection of performances.

For me, Spike Lee never lets you down. A moving performance by Charles S. Dutton, and decent performances by a lot of "before they were famous" actors like Isaiah Washington and Bernie Mac. The only thing I didn't like was how some of the characters and conflicts between the people on the bus seemed somewhat stereotypical. Many of the interactions were based on what this or that kind of person should be like, and I think Spike Lee could have made the characters a little more well-rounded.

There are enough issues here for three films by a perennial provoker like Lee, and critics will undoubtedly accuse him of throwing too much fuel on the fire. But this time, aided by Reggie Rock Bythewood’s thoughtful script, Lee’s ambition pays off. With 15 men squeezed together on a single bus, issues such as racism, homophobia and responsibility are tackled as they would be in real life: fitfully, passionately, derisively and, above all, hilariously.
