Gertrud (1964)

Hopeless romantic Gertrud inhabits a turn-of-the-century milieu of artists and musicians, where she pursues an idealized notion of love that will always elude her. She abandons her distinguished husband and embraces an affair with a young concert pianist, who falls short of her desire for lasting affection. When an old lover returns to her life, fresh disappointments follow, and Gertrud must try to come to terms with reality.

Looks like a poetry, truly poetic film examining the questions of love between men and women, searching an answer within woman's soul. Ascetisism in the picture of the film is fascinating. Great film of a great director.

Exquisitely photographed. That's the only nice thing I have to say about this movie. Ridiculously melodramatic dialogue brought to life by ridiculously bad actors. What a waste of time.

Mostly composed of long takes of conversations, Dreyer creates an unnervingly poignant observation on memory and free will, among other things.

Two hours of people talking, not looking at each other, but talking about their emotions without actually expressing them. There are moment's of brilliance, but mostly still shots of wooden actors staring off into the distance. Dreyer is a great director, he just seems absent on this one.

i havent got a clue what film some of you other reviewers were watching, but it wasnt the same one i saw. Anyway it wasnt a film, it was a bloody experience! Tough going i admit, but most worthwhile things are.
