Gas Food Lodging (1992)

Nora, a single mother raising two teenage daughters, Shade and Trudi, waits tables at a truck-stop diner in a small New Mexico town. As meditation on growing up poor and female, this double edged sword challenges stereotypes of class, gender and race as portrayed on film. Director Allison Anders gives us a private look into a corner of American life not usually discussed on the big screen. She tells not only her story, but the stories of all the unrepresented single women and people of color struggling to make their way in American. Life shattering circumstances occur every day in this look at female coming of age in the 1990s. Great performances all around with nuance and conflict. Anders must be held among her Sundance peers (Quentin Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Joel and Ethan Coen) as one of the premiere filmmakers of the American Independent Film Movement. Film schools take note, teach her stories, share her films. Studios #HireTheseWomen!

Well done early 90s film set in small town Texas with a under-commented upon side-story about Latino/Anglo relations. Solid soundtrack by Barry Adamson of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

Good film with an unexpected ending...All I can say is thank God I am not in their shoes!

Gas Food Lodging's poster sums up everything the movie isn't about. In a woeful effort to put a sexy spin on proceedings, lone Skye and Fairuza Balk stare out with dodgy come-hither pouts, and the tag line ("When Shade's good she's very good, but when Trudi's bad, she's better") succeeds, with just a dozen words, to undermine the integrity of the whole damn shooting match.

I really relate to Fairuza Balk's character in this movie and naturally, Allison Anders if one of my favorite directors.
