Gamera: Guardian of the Universe (1995)

A ship runs aground on a mysterious atoll leading to an investigation by insurance representative Kusanagi, who discovers an ancient bead that he gives to his daughter Asagi. Meanwhile, ornithologist Nagamine investigates reports of a new species of large bird named Gyaos. As the Gyaos begin to attack, an ancient guardian with a bond to Asagi emerges.

Often lauded as great films, I found the Gamera Hesei Films to be somewhat lacking myself. While better than any of his 60's films, IMHO it falls short of the entertainment value or cohesiveness of the Hesei Godzilla Franchise . . .

Shusuke Kaneko jump started the gamera franchise with this masterpiece surpassing most of the popular Godzilla movies in terms of creativity and visionary. The FX is what is showcased in these types of films and Shinji Higuchi knows his shots and knows how to make them come alive! Brilliant job to everyone involved in making this film

Gyaos is one of the best bad-guy monsters that i think has ever come out of Japan. I was lucky enough to get the British special edition, where the voices at least sound normal and the film has been excellently dubbed, but since you're probably gonna be hard stretched to find one of those i'd recommend just using the subtitles. This movie is quite simply awesome, and i now place my money on Gamera if theres ever gonna be the Godzilla Vs Gamera movies that they keep threatening to unleash on us but never do. 3 cheers for the rocket-endowed turtle

Despite not having a brilliant story or effects that match American blockbusters of the time it is a fun and often kickass monster movie with a fun story and great monster fights. This movie took a character who was little more than low budget kids fair and made him cool and that's no small feet
