Gabbeh (1996)

An elderly couple go about their routine of cleaning their gabbeh, while bickering gently with each other. Magically, a young woman appears, helping the two clean the rug. From an Iranian elderly nomadic couple's carpet (called a Gabbeh) emerges a young woman who tells them the story of her clan. An original look at life and love in the Iranian traditional sense. However it is as poetic and colourful as it is lost in its own preciousness, and the first half of the film is certainly more appealing than the second one, where its structure starts to crumble.

"Life is color. Love is color" Gabbeh has a classic story. A love story about a girl from Qashqai tribe. It can be simply told in two or three lines, but Makhmalbaf's version of this simple story is precious and inestimable. The atmosphere of the movie was full of life. Full of color. It was not just a movie, but a cinematic piece of poetry by Makhmalbaf.

The colour pallet is the best I've ever seen. Great scene sets. The ladies are weaving the carpets and in parallel they 're weaving the fate. Less is MORE!!!

The conceit is sweet but the execution is meandering.
