Gabbeh (1996)

An elderly couple go about their routine of cleaning their gabbeh, while bickering gently with each other. Magically, a young woman appears, helping the two clean the rug. This young woman belongs to the clan whose history is depicted in the design of the gabbeh, and the rug recounts the story of the courtship of the young woman by a stranger from the clan.

This film is like watching a living painting. The director uniquely interweaves the past & present with a neo-realistic element of story-telling (comparable on some levels to Italian Neo-Realism)

confusing story even for one who speaks and understands Farsi..i think you must watch it more than once to "get" what is going on. that aside, it is an absolutely gorgeous film. i miss Iran.

This charmingly poetic film is a real surprise coming from Makhmalbaf, whose incendiary and controversial documentaries and features have been banned in his home country.
