The story of a family of Quakers in Indiana in 1862. Their religious sect is strongly opposed to violence and war. It's not easy for them to meet the rules of their religion in everyday life but when Southern troops pass the area they are in real trouble. Should they fight, despite their peaceful attitude?

So sweet. Great performances from Cooper and McGuire. Fun for the whole family.

This is Gary Cooper at his best. It is a look at some of the hostility that Quakers faced during the Civil War in the north for abstaining from violence. The movie is funny at times and others deadly serious. There were some historical inaccuracies with Morgan's Raiders, but this was common in 1950s cinema. It is an entertaining movie and one worth your time.

a charming somewhat laconic portrayal of a gentle man's exhuberance for all things good and wonderful tensioned by his faith and the countries incursion into war. cooper does what he does best, act teasingly playful yet serene. unfortunately the goose is most remembered.

OUTSTANDING DRAMA, WITH A TOP NOTCH PERFORMANCE BY GARY COOPER. HE IS SUPERB. THOUGHTFUL WILLIAM WYLER DIRECTION. THE GOOSE IS SO FUNNY! ANTHONY PERKINS HAS ONE OF HIS BETTER ROLES. A FINE FILM IN EVERY SENSE.

Monday, July 4, 2011 (1956) Friendly Persuasion DRAMA Based on a novel centering on a typical American Quaker family with Gary Cooper as the father, right through to the Civil War! In terms of book adaptions into film, I have to say director William Wyler is one of the best stoytellers of all time because I find how fascinating the way Quaker used to act and talk like before, such as using words like "thee" and "thy" and how it's changed through out the years. And how they would call a church a "meeting place" where they just sit together and discuss the bible instead of have a sermon standing on front of a autorium! The story is a bit long and could've been shortened after a morethan two hour running time length, I have to say it's still handle quite well despite leaving some unanswered questions! 3 out of 4
