This is a lovely sweet picture about wartime America during the first World War (ironic as it was produced during the second). Coincidentally, it had a feel of advertising heroism and love that anyone can find overseas. No, this movie had everything including soul, but there was hardly any plot; just another one of those damn forced films of MGM for the sake of glory that they sought in the young, high-rising, gorgeous, powerful actress following her monstrous success in Wizard of Oz. Great start for Kelly though, and thank GOD.

Putting my biases up front, I love Gene Kelly and Judy Garland, so there was very little chance of me disliking this movie. The song and dance numbers were great, and the pro-war propaganda was at least creative pro-war propaganda. The movie is definitely a product of its times, though, and will not survive as well as some other MGM musicals. Moreover, the choice to go black and white made this one less vibrant and luscious than other MGM musicals. Enjoyable, but far from the best MGM musical there is.

Gene Kelly and Judy Garland have such great onscreen chemistry. Besides Mickey Rooney and Fred Astaire, he was the best leading man for her.
