Aiming for a piece with the raw impact of "Precious," on which he served as executive producer, he (Perry) ends up with 134 minutes of misjudged intensity.

Perry has taken Shange's feminist word-and-movement portraits of disenfranchised African-American women and turned those howls into...a maddeningly choppy mess of a Tyler Perry movie.

If you were fortunate enough to have seen the play, you would appreciate this movie 100 times over! The way that Perry interwove the lives and scenes (the play was mostly soliloquies!) was pure genius. Though it (like most media) does nothing to boost the image of the black man in America, his contribution to the play and playwrite is admirable. Every woman (including Janet Jackson who seems to be reading her lines throughout the movie) deserves recognition for their acting...

"Precious" worked partly because it did not wrap its sordid tale in Christian uplift and dime-store psychology -- elements that have made Tyler Perry a rich filmmaker but have turned For Colored Girls shrill and manipulative.

Kimberly Elise gives the best performance as a beleaguered woman with an abusive boyfriend (Michael Ealy).
