Flying Padre (1951)

Stanley Kubrick's short documentary about Father Fred Stadtmueller, a Catholic priest serving a vast 4,000-square-mile parish in rural New Mexico. To reach his scattered congregation, he pilots his own Piper Cub aircraft, the Spirit of St. Joseph. Over two days, Kubrick follows the "flying padre" as he conducts Mass, mediates between quarreling children, attends a funeral, and airlifts a sick child to medical care—capturing both the challenges and quiet heroism of his daily mission.

This is a silly short film about a small town priest who will go to any length for his fellow parishoners. Notable only for the fact that it is Stanley Kubrick's first piece of filmmaking.

This propaganda for missionary work is perfunctory and artificial and opportunities for a dramatic or human touch are missed. With all the starch taken out of it, it is only really worth watching for historical interest relating to either its subject matter or its director.

This was a bit of an underwhelming documentary. I usually don't mind it when documentaries have staged footage, even when they combine it with real footage, but I do mind it when those staged clips are easily noticeable as they can bring you out of the experience. That was why I didn't care for this film. Even though this film displays some of Kubrick's cinematography talents (many clever shots can be found in this film), it's still pretty forgettable. As the saying goes, however, everyone has to start somewhere.

Minor, mild early effort from Stanley Kubrick.

Kubrick's second short black and white documentary is quite weird and funny in a unique way. Its shorter than the previous one and this time the camera follows a priest that travels between his parish by... his airplane of course! A fast mean for saving time and offering help to all of his flock, just like a humble superhero. The voice over narration fits great and the picture has overall nice air shots but apart from these is nothing special, just for one view ;)
