Director Cheh Chang and The Venoms milk their successful formula once again in this story about five students who seek recent on those who destroyed their beloved Shaolin Temple, each of them learning their own fighting style to become the titular Five Shaolin Masters. As with most of Chang and The Venoms' films, the story is not much to speak of, but the fights are excellent. After watching several of their films recently, I've noticed one thing they do well is that all of the fight are consistently good, but they always make sure the final fight sequence is always the best. This sounds small, but it's something that's ruined many films. My favorite example of this is "Blade," which was ruined by the bloodbath vampire rave opening scene because nothing else after that lived up to those first moments. Starring Gordon Liu and Ti Lung, with action choreography by Lau Kar Leung, this is another solid martial arts picture from The Venoms.

When their brothers are struck down by the Manchu, five Shaolin brothers decide to hide out and train until they can defeat their oppressors. The movie doesn't have much in terms of story, but a climax full of fighting and a swell cast (Ti Lung, David Chiang, Leung Kar Yan, Fu Sheng, plus more) make it interesting.

A classic '70's martial arts picture; great cast of actors who would go on to star in their own films.

The age old format of betrayal, defeat, retrain and revenge plays out well with an emotional finale.
