Maybe the film that got Perkins cast in Psycho and The Trial...seeing this film, and Perkins without previous film associations in mind, is the key to understanding why he is so effective as characters with nervous or psychotic problems--when a guy looks like the wholesome American icon, it is really shocking to see him crack up. You'd expect Kirk Douglas or Robert Mitchum to break out at any moment with chilling violence, but Perkins is the most excellent example of counter-casting, like Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in the West. You'd just as soon expect to see Kim Jung Il at a geriatric southern gentlewomen's bingo convention as Perkins flipping his lid or Fonda shooting little kids....that's one reason why Perkins is infinitely better than Vince Vaghn in the 2 Psycho films...Vaughn may play comedies, but that doesn't make him essentially counter-cast as Norman Bates, as the remakers may have thought.

Anthony Perkins is impressive. You will be caught off guard, because you won't understand why the music is so edgy. They play up the break-down a little too much, but it's great for a laugh.

1950's true life baseball story of the enigmatic Jimmy Piersall, shows what happens when a father pushes his son too hard to live out his own dream. The film starts out pretty much by the book, showing how he ascended into the majors, but really takes a wrong turn a little too far into left field. Although the story is true, it becomes an exercise in melodrama instead of digging deeper into the psychology of the mental breakdown. The ending was also underwhelming and lacked triumph. Perkins was pretty good going beserk during the games, and Malden seamlessly filled the role of overbearing father, and it's worth seeing for that, but it's an overall not-quite-satisfying movie.

Harrowing look at pressures on a young ballplayer.

These sort of sports melodramas are a dime a dozen, and this one's well below average.
