The details of the plot are unimportant: that is the main point made by the skillful director, Benoît Jacquot. It is the slowness with which they realize what is happening that fascinates.

A slow burn of a film that uses a new vantage point to breath fresh life into a story we all know. Surprisingly engrossing.

It's an 18th Century French Downton Abbey. Yes, it's historically inaccurate, but it looks great and tells an absorbing story. The actors are fantastic and having fun with a terrific script about the last days of French royalty at Versailles as seen from the perspective of the servants. If you enjoy historical novels, this film is definitely for you.

Taking the angle of a secret lover of Marie Antoinette in view of her final days, Farewell, My Queen indeed offers the audience the humanistic sides of this notorious aristocrat. Unfortunately, the film is more of suppressed passion and desire than the history itself leading to nowhere, which is not quite fruitful and rewarding after all.

Benoit Jacquot's engrossing film tells a story we know well, seen from a point of view we may not have considered.
