Farewell My Queen's glimpses into the final days of court life at Versailles in 1789 are expertly rendered, capturing a highly believable atmosphere of faded decadence, imperial hauteur and an increasingly desperate sense of rising panic as the regime totters towards oblivion and the new bloodthirsty Republic. Servant Sidonie (Lea Seydoux from Inglourious Basterds, Mysteries of Lisbon and Midnight in Paris) is Marie Antoinette's devoted reader, who finds the entire world of Versailles crumbling around her. Diane Kruger fills the role of the capricious, obsessive Queen with aplomb, and Virginie Ledoyen is her favourite de Polignac, loathed by the masses and loved by the Queen with an equal fervour. Filmed on location in Versailles itself, this is a well-crafted glimpse into what life might have been like - fleas, rats and all - in the dying days of the French monarchy.

Taking the angle of a secret lover of Marie Antoinette in view of her final days, Farewell, My Queen indeed offers the audience the humanistic sides of this notorious aristocrat. Unfortunately, the film is more of suppressed passion and desire than the history itself leading to nowhere, which is not quite fruitful and rewarding after all.

Triangle amoureux à Versailles durant les jours cruciaux de juillet 1789: la reine Marie-Antoinette aime sa favorite, la duchesse de Polignac, et est aimée de sa lectrice, une orpheline nommée Sidonie. Tout ce petit monde bruissera de rumeurs, rivalisera d'hypocrisie et se nourrira de ses rivalités, alors que la Révolution est prête à balayer l'Ancien régime. La qualité principale de ces "Adieux à la reine" est de retranscrire avec réalisme, une atmosphère, celle de cet univers superficiel et détaché du monde réel, frappé de stupeur et de paralysie lorsqu'il découvrira que la fête est finie. Bien que ce film en costumes, visuellement tout à fait luxueux, s'attarde sur des événements déjà abondamment illustrés par le cinéma, il possède au moins le mérite de permettre l'observation, une fois n'est pas coutume à travers les yeux d'une roturière, du Versailles côté femmes.

Léa Seydoux does a wonderful job as Sidonie Laborde in this French film. Her eyes are soulful and watching, The action moves between the gilded drawing rooms of the nobles and to the back quarters for those that serve the king and queen.
