Farewell, My Queen has some routine period-drama moments, but at its boldest it foretells a time when a single girl can be a free woman.

Jacquot gazes avidly at this closed-in world of women; if his camera pressed any closer to them, it would be subcutaneous.

This French film beautifully captures the setting: Versailles in July 1789, as the palace residents begin to recognize the threat of the building revolution at their gates. The story is seen through the eyes of Sidonie, a young woman who serves as the queen's "reader." Her loving (almost slavish) devotion to the queen is the focal point used to unveil the growing dread of what is to come, as well as the paradox of the royals' expectations versus reality. But for all the beauty of the cinematography, the exquisite details, and the tension of the plot, the ending felt abrupt and unfinished, and was a bit disappointing.

Benoit Jacquot's engrossing film tells a story we know well, seen from a point of view we may not have considered.

It might be that Marie still waits for a true incarnation, but Jacquot's pushing her beyond likeability is refreshing.
