Fanny and Alexander (1982)

As children in the loving Ekdahl family, Fanny and Alexander enjoy a happy life with their parents, who run a theater company. After their father dies unexpectedly, however, the siblings end up in a joyless home when their mother, Emilie, marries a stern bishop. The bleak situation gradually grows worse as the bishop becomes more controlling, but dedicated relatives make a valiant attempt to aid Emilie, Fanny and Alexander.

One of my favorite movies of all time. I think that the portrayal of human emotion is incredible. It is very abstracty, and I'd recommend it to anybody who enjoys movies.

Aspects are brighter than some of his films, especially in the early portions. The earthy humor I've always tasted bits of in his previous films are in fuller force as well. But it's still very much a Bergman film, so you have the beautiful visual compositions, the wonderfully rich characters and storylines, and the fantastic elements that serve to reflect psychological states, hidden desires. The climax is a bit perplexing, but makes sense in light of ghosts appearing and what-not. Impressive.

If the uncut Fanny and Alexander is Bergman's greatest work, as I think, it's because it's his most inclusive. He shows almost everything: all his moods, conflicts, styles and many of his favorite actors.
