Extraction II (6/16/23, Netflix, R, 2hr, D/Sam Hargrave), written/produced by the Russo brothers, continues the high octane action from 2020's original. Filmed across four countries, "Tyler" (Thor's Chris Hemsworth) is hired out of retirement to extract his ex-wife's sister and kids from a Czech prison, but he and his team of two are up against a huge, ruthless band of a drug/arms runners. There's lots of intense hand-to-hand fighting since everyone is wearing layers of body armor, lots of chases, and lots of equipment destruction. The betrayal that the story turns on is understandable but it's executed stupidly, in fact there are a few stupid moments mixed in with all the octane and that's why you're seeing some low reviews, and it's why I knocked this down to a 7. Also, Hemsworth doesn't act so much as fight/bludgeon, his character is more Neanderthal than modern action hero so that's a problem too. Anyway, they all but telegraphed there'd be a third adventure minus "Yaz", so this might be a new action franchise we're seeing unfold.

The prison and train missions are basically what Call of Duty could dream of becoming if they made an adaptation. And I call them missions instead of film sequences because that's basically how this feel, like a video game. Now the adverse and favorable aspects of it depend on more things than the criteria of each viewer, but at the end of the day you have to admit that most of its design depends on it, to entertain you, and if you enjoyed the first one, of course you'll enjoy this one. I don't see how you won't. Extraction 2 is like any sequel. Everything is bigger and consequently hollower. The life of this film just like its predecessor exists solely in its 120-minute running time. There's nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't mean anything really good either. At least the whole thing is not poorly made and to entertain yourself just for the sake of it isn't a negative thing when you know that's what you want and that this is what delivers it. I'm not eager to see the impending third movie but we will have wait and see what they do. One way or another they have to go higher.

The sum total is superior in every way to what he dished out last time. With a third one openly teased at the end, the fog has lifted: Hemsworth has landed on his Bourne, and this is his Supremacy.

Extraction 2 feels like a glossier and more by-the-numbers extension of the first movie. By giving Rake, their Sad Action Hero, something more to fight for, the filmmakers accidentally stripped the character of what made him so compelling in the first place.

When this thing moves — and, wow, does it ever — it offers one of the best examples yet of what Netflix bucks can buy. It even makes off with upped emotion (including that engendered by shining a brighter spotlight on the wonderful Farahani and Bessa), a new dimension to the always-evolving Hemsworth, and proof that the action franchise can capture old thrills with new stories.
