Evocateur: The Morton Downey Jr. Movie (2013)

Long before O'Reilly and Beck, Morton Downey, Jr., was tearing up the talk-show format with his divisive populism. Between the fistfights, rabid audience, and Mort's cigarette smoke always "in your face," The Morton Downey Jr. Show was billed as "3-D television," "rock and roll without the music." Évocateur meditates on the hysteria that ended the '80s and ultimately its most notorious agitator.

Évocateur is never less than watchable. At the same time, you have to wonder who’s going to watch it. In an era when fame seems measured in increments even shorter than Warhol’s 15 minutes, a 91-minute documentary about a bug-eyed, chain-smoking sociopath who soared high and fell fast so long ago smacks of folly and misdirected energy, like trying to make a biography out of a footnote.

This documentary probably raises more questions than it answers, but it does give a fair portrait of a very interesting character.

The movie, made by three former teenage fans of the show, is an odd mixture of admiration and repulsion; even his friends and former producers, interviewed for the camera, seemed mixed in their feelings for him.

A documentary about a talk show host who was way ahead of his time who knew how to pull all emotional strings out of people, very similar to the idea of socialite "Donald Trump" running for president in 2015-2016. Sadly like all of us humans Morton Downey Jr. was flawed to the bone and was his own undoing, but his contribution to what we call "reality" television today can't be underestimated...

This pull-no-punches portrait shocks and amuses with equal frequency.
