Rick Alverson's breakthrough film about a bitter, aging stand-up comedian who is a character that Nathaniel West might have conceived.

Like Hamburger's meta-hacky comedy routine, the film confronts and challenges in order to produce something increasingly rare in American cinema: an active, engaged experience.

Entertainment is rife with randomness, shot through with misery and self-loathing and flat out unpleasant as a screen experience.

The director ruined this by not letting Greg stay in Neil Hamburger character the whole time. Why the hell did you do that you shithead? Go rip off Wes Anderson and stop ruining good comedians!

It was hard to get on board for this. I appreciate what they were going for, but the bleakness and depression the film hinged on was also its undoing.
