Empire of the Ants (1977)

A Florida real estate developer and her captain lure investors to a property in the Everglades called Dreamland Shores, under false pretenses that the swampland will soon be developed. I've always been partial to insect invasion movies, especially when there's a giant insect (or arachnid) involved. Empire of the Ants follows the old insects-turned-giant-from-radioactive- waste-dumped-carelessly-in-the-ocean routine (I guess that was back before they knew radioactive waste was bad for you). Before long, sleazy real estate hustlers are trying to hustle even sleazier people into investing in a housing development project. You can guess where this goes- straight into a terror-filled night in the swamp where only a handful survive. Then the movie gets good, but I can't tell about it without giving away the surprise ending. An above-average example of the giant radioactive insect genre, I'd strongly recommend Empire of the Ants.

Poor Joan Collins, she must have needed something to do while she waited around to star in TV's DYNASTY a few years after this big bug picture directed by Bert I. Gordon (who had directed a ton of radiocative giant running amock flicks back in the 1950s and 60s). by 1977, its chemical waste that causes the ants to grow to enourmous size. Its a so-bad-its-good type of film with cheesy FX to laugh at and Joan is a real trooper as she struggles with such god-awful dialogue and with such phony ant apendages.

One of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Honestly, I could really empathize with the ants in this one.

A wonderful campy sci-fi horror classic from the 1970s. A nice romp through the trash that used to litter drive-in moves from days gone by.
