The film documents a Guatemalan who enters the U.S. unlawfully and takes on the maid position in a household that many newer immigrants inherit by default. Long, but amusing, sweet and to the point. We have not seen this sort of Hollywood effort to capture the plight of unlawful immigrants in years. Newer movies should focus on the frustration in a humorous but more realistic way. There has not been a 'legalization' since 1986 making this movie in need of a remake.

Have seen this movie dozens of times, used it in Spanish classes, and it never fails to make people stop and think, at least momentarily, of just what might be bringing so many souls up here to the "promised land." Excellent, my favorite type of movie that makes you forget you're watching, and draws you deeply into the story of these people.

A milestone film that was one of the first to tell the story of illegal immigration from the perspective of the immigrants themselves, this is a powerful and moving story despite some amateurish acting and occasionally heavy-handed dialogue.
