Nice story, pretty relevant in today's (2007) debate on immigration.

It's predictable and heavy-handed, but the ultimate message of the oppression of the immigrant and the death of the American dream due to our corrupt capitalist system makes "El Norte" required viewing for anyone leaning towards a conservative viewpoint on immigration reform.

El Norte deserves credit for being one of the first films to engage American cinema in a discourse on the immigrant experience, but its approach to the material—shallow, condescending, and hectoring—undermines its stabs at brutal realism.

Unbearably depressing, with some truly disturbing scenes. I wasn't sure how to feel at the end...I felt sympathy for the main characters, but I also felt as if my emotions had been toyed with, especially with the assumed "shocking" last shot.
