the definitive portrait of the experience of undocumented Latin-American workers in the United States

I love this movie. I have seen it countless times. I've used it in my anthropology classes and the movie is a great instigator for discussions regarding immigration, ethnic relations and social class both in Central America and the USA. There is a lot of symbolism in the movie and underlying messages. I think the 'just a pair of arms' message is powerful and unfortunatly often true.

escaping from guatamala is easy; smuggling yourself through the sewers from tijuana to san diego, not so much so; living in the promised land.. one crisis after another. in general, watchable, though slow at times. perhaps more accessible than most south american movies. character driven rather than depending on its plot [rather, gosford park, so to speak].

Certainly a landmark film. Would have been an outright classic with better lighting and a better ending.

On the surface El Norte is the essence of simplicity. But in 1983, the simple story was both news to many and history to many others finally seeing their story depicted on screen on their terms.
