Despite an abrupt ending, Mana gives us compelling, damaged characters who we want to help -- or hurt. Perhaps most important, El Bola forces us examine our personal motivations for each impulse and their consequences.

12 year old is abused physically and emotionally by his father. the mother is powerless and taking care of an aging senile grandmother. friendship develops w/ a warm and communicative family who helps the boy get away from his father. unflinching. abuse victims might want to stay clear of this one.
