Interesting way of putting it together but it's not for me. Maybe if I cared about painting more.

There have been countless film biographies of famous artists, but only a few can be considered major works in their own right. Place Edvard Munch at the top of the list.

Phenomenal movie from Britain's most unfairly neglected director. Watkins sees Munch's art as being based in his economic situation, his early family life, and the conformist nature of Norwegian society. The film brilliantly balances marxist and documentary approaches with a poetic sense of artistic creation. Anyone interested in art must watch this; it's extraordinarily intelligent and moving, as well as formally innovative and still unique.

deft, sacrosanct, images of sensuality captured like birth on film.
