The story of Joan Jett's original band, The (all-female) Runaways. This was a group that was manufactured by their sleazy manager Kim Fowley, who is shown here in a less than positive light. Most of the girls in the group were only 16 at the time. It tells of their battle with drugs, each other and the scars left once the band split up (after 4 years). The most moving part is when the late (drummer) Sandy West describes her life post Runaways as a drug runner and hit woman. Scary stuff. All she ever really wanted to do was be behind the drums and playing with the girls again. Two main things however make this film less than perfect. 1.There is no contribution from Joan Jett and 2. None of The Runaways original (and excellent) music is used - though they are shown performing a cover of Lou Reed's 'Rock 'N' Roll (not one of their best songs). Directed by their (at one time) bassist.

Definitely a must-see for Runaways fans but the glaring absence of Joan Jett did leave a hole in the narrative. Still, the other ladies filled in nicely and it made me lament the death of the band all the more. Somebody really needed to step in and put their foot in Kim Fowley's ass!

I was so incredibly touched, touched to tears, by Sandy West.

Here is a very personal documentary about the classic all-girl 70s rock band, The Runaways. It was made by them for the fans. It takes you through the bands history, from creation to demise. It's all told from their point of views so it can be a bit bias but it does a good job of exposing the exploitation and greed that ran rampant and unpunished during that time period of music. If you are a fan of the band, this is an absolute must see. It's emotional and personal and best of all, unrestrained, just like The Runaways themselves.

A very decent documentary of the band The Runaways. Most the women form the band were talked to with the exception of Joan Jett though her presence if felt through the stories told by other band members. The ladies are very upfront about their time in the band and even address the verbal/emotional/sexual abuse by their producer. Definitely worth a watch.
