Edge of the World (2021)

Sarawak, in the northeast of the island of Borneo, 1839. Almost by chance, the British adventurer James Brooke is appointed rajah by the Sultan of Brunei, and as an independent ruler he embarks on a personal crusade to eradicate piracy, slavery and headhunting, while trying to curb the malevolent expansionist ambitions of the British Empire.

Edge of the World fails to do justice to this fascinating and deeply complex chapter in British colonial history.

(Mauro Lanari) True story that tells the alleged idyllic, irenic, paradisiacal relationship of a man, Brooke, with the nature of Borneo and, in general, of humanity with Nature, finally freed from exploitation, parasitism, colonialism: addressed to fans of deep ecology, I wonder if the director Haussman knows the existence of a colonialism also authorial: was there a need to fill the movie with allusions to Willard and Kurtz? Where Edge of the World distinguishes itself is in its evocative visuals of Borneo’s unspoiled beauty (courtesy of cinematographer Jaime Feliu-Torres) and the lived-in intensity of Meyers. If the film can’t help but feel like a relic from a bygone era, that’s ultimately part of its appeal.

While it might not knock it out of the park, Edge of the World is still a very solid watch if a little slow-going and might also just inspire you to revisit some of the classics its indebted to which is its own small triumph.
