Early Summer (1951)

In postwar Tokyo, Noriko lives with her extended family. Although she enjoys her career and her social life, her more traditional family worries about her single marital status at the advanced age of 28. 40-year-old business associate Takako proposes, Noriko's family press her into accepting, but when her widowed childhood friend Kenkichi returns to the neighborhood, she finds her heart leading in another direction.

The best movie about family life I have ever seen next to Tokyo Story. This is in fact the first Ozu film I've seen but it became the basis in watching the rest of his films and connecting with them. Truly my favourite director of all time and one to emulate for his simplicity and sophistication.

True masterpieces are those which don't let audiences check their watches but let them wish to share times with the characters forever, and this is definitely one of them.

Despite the slow pace this film is very interesting and is much easier to follow upon second viewing once all the characters and the huge supporting cast can be distinguished

It seems bland on the surface, but this is an engrossing movie about a family and their daughter's marriage.

Once I got past thinking this was a sequel, which followed on directly from "Late Spring", -which I found very confusing at first- I realised how creative and unique the idea of the trilogy having the same actors and character names, because it makes them feel like parallel worlds, which is very interesting to watch as you understand the characters more in each film.
