On the night of the 1969 federal election, Don Henderson invites a group of friends to celebrate a predicted Labor Party victory, much to the dismay of his wife, Kath. The Hendersons and their nine guests drink, joke, make love, and fight, all while coming to terms with their individual struggles in life.

A work of towering genius that is sadly misunderstood by po-faced critics. Offensive on so many levels that it is hard to know where to begin, and so very evocative of the late 60s Australian beer-swilling neanderthal male that you can almost smell the stale sweat... a joy!

For such an iconic film, this sure was a let down. Mentioned now more for it's leftist political undertones rather than anything else, it was more an attempt at a drunken yobbo swingers party from the sticks of Sydney in the 70's than anything else. The election being played out was as minor part of the story as humanly possible, almost an afterthought. The characters were on the most part borish, which leaves me wondering about the praise heaped on David Williamson. It's left me scratching my head over all the fuss.

Don's Party owes a good measure of its comic gusto and accuracy to the impression that the filmmakers not only know these supposedly enlightened brutes but get a considerable kick out of their uncouth impulses.
